Untitled (Mother of the Seals, An Eskimo Legend)

Brown-toned b/w photograph of Inuit woman appropriated from American explorer Robert E. Peary’s 1898 book Northward over the “Great Ice” from 1898. Peary took the photo himself and titled it “Mother of the Seals (An Eskimo Legend)” in his book. The photograph is most likely a test print for Pia Arke’s photo montage Arctic Hysteria alias Arctic Hysteria IV (1997)
