The Gant family is on leave of absence in Denmark from April to October. Pia enrolls
in Marie Mørk’s Boarding School in Hillerød, northwest of Copenhagen, and stays there when the rest of the family goes back to Greenland.

The Gant family moves to Nuuk, West Greenland, together with Pia.

Pia graduates from lower secondary school.

Attends the folk high school Ungdoms- højskolen ved Ribe, Ribe, Denmark.

Finds her half-brother Ole Brønlund, who lives in Scoresbysund/Ittoqqortoormiit.

Changes her last name to Arke after her mother’s maiden name Arqe.

Settles in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Enters The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen. Studies painting and photography under Professors Mogens Møller, Bjørn Nørgaard, and Per Bak Jensen until 1993.

Produces her first pinhole camera

• Inauguration of her large pinhole camera obscura at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, on May 29, 1990.

• Pia’s son Søren Arke is born.

• Pia ships her large pinhole camera obscura to Nuugaarsuk Point, Narssaq.

• Travels to New York in spring 1995. Research at the Explorers’ Club and The American Museum of Natural History into archival material on the condition ‘Arctic hysteria’.

• Enters the Department of Theory and Communication at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen.

• Acquires an MFA degree in 1995 with her thesis Etnoæstetik (Ethno-Aesthetics / Etnoæstetik

• Her graduate thesis Etnoæstetik (Ethno- Aesthetics / Etnoæstetik, 2010) is published by the art journal ARK, no. 17, Aarhus, 1995.

• Ships her large pinhole camera obscura to Lønstrup Cliff, North Jutland, Denmark, to photograph the ocean view. The process is documented in Galleri 11, a 30 min. short television feature produced by DR.

• Ships her large pinhole camera obscura to Kronborg Castle, Elsinore, Denmark.

Travels to Ittoqqortoormiit in June for a month to conduct research for the book work Scoresbysundhistorier. Fotografier, kolonisering og kortlægning (2003)

Studies Multimedia Design at the Multimedieinstituttet, Copenhagen.

Forms the ‘Society for Ethnographic Film Blunders’ with brother Erik Gant and friend Anders Jørgensen.

Travels to Scoresbysund/Ittoqqortoormiit to conduct research for the book work Scoresbysundhistorier. Fotografier, kolonisering og kortlægning (2003). With the help of different town members, Pia identifies w people and events in archival and private historical photographs. Exhibits the result in the local museum, Ittoqqortoormiit Kalersungaasiviat.

Publishes Scoresbysundhistorier. Fotografier, kolonisering og kortlægning (Stories from Scoresbysund: Photographs, Colonisation and Mapping) is published by Borgen Publishers in Copenhagen, 2003.

Dies of cancer on May 14th in Copenhagen.
