List of works and artist’s statement by Pia Arke for the group show Fie Johansen, Pia Arke on view in Albertslund Town Hall, Albertslund, Denmark, April 29 – May 23, 1994. Collection of the Danish National Art Library, Copenhagen. Photo: Peter Baastrup The pinhole camera is made of wood. Its dimensions accord with my size, so that I can stand and lie inside it. It was built in Copenhagen, after which I sent it by ship to South Greenland. Five months of 1990 passed from the time when I got the idea to when I had ‘the image in the box.’ I grew up in bleak places like this. They functioned as communication and weather observation posts for the surrounding world. They were established in the mid-1920s and were closed down during the 1980s in step with technological developments (satellites). I have always had a strong desire to revisit these places to see what has become of them. They have accompanied me in my memory – they are a part of me and my way of seeing and experiencing the world. They have a very clear language, which speaks of time, development, oblivion, and transience. They remind me of who we are. Not always in a comforting manner.”
